Architectural design

The placement of the new volumes took into account the existing village structure that has emerged. The volumes were positioned perimetrically so that the existing wooded area and the space in front of the new building could form a square that could be used as a community area.

Based on the space programme of the building, a two-storey volume has been planned in order to ensure an optimal floor area. As the surrounding area is mainly made up of 1-2 storey smaller detached houses, instead of designing an excessive volume, the designed volume of the building on the second floor is half the size of the ground floor.

Simple rectangular volumes allow the external perimeter to be optimised for a more energy efficient solution. For a better integration with the surrounding buildings, a canopy has been added to the building to separate the volumes. The canopy is designed with a green roof. The green roof will help to reduce overheating of the roof as well as providing a visual amenity for workers. The height of the canopy will be in line with the height of the desk. The building has been fitted with pitched roofs which visually reduce the size of the second floor and blend in with the surroundings. The roofs are intersecting to allow for right-roof tile-tile work. To provide passive cooling, external screening has been added to the second floor volume. It is not necessary to add screening to the first floor volume as the extended canopy serves the purpose. The pattern of the screening is inspired by the pattern of the West-Viru County belt.

The space programme of the building is based on the space programme of the competition application. The front of the building is planned to have open spaces such as a dining area and a sports area. The office space is divided into a quieter separate zone in the rear façade of the ground floor and a volume on the second floor. The workspace is planned as an open plan workspace and is articulated with various smaller activities or spaces. Work areas can be separated by interior design using sound-absorbing panels, as well as plant walls or shelving to screen the backs. On the second floor, there is a seating area that functions both as an evacuation staircase and as a roof terrace, where it is possible to enjoy the food you have brought with you in fine weather.
